EVENT NEWS! "In Her Words: 20th Century Lesbian Fi

EVENT NEWS! "In Her Words: 20th Century Lesbian Fiction" appears at the Muskoka Queer Film Festival May 17, 2023.

The film documents the history and impact of lesbian fiction from the 1920s through the1990s. Narrator Lillian Faderman recounts the impact key world events had on LGBTQ history throughout the decades. With interviews from numerous trailblazing lesbian authors, including Ann Bannon, Rita Mae Brown, Jewel Gomez and Sarah Waters, we learn how these world events helped shape their stories and to what extent the stories were reflections of the authors’ own lives as they looked for affirmation and their place in the world.

The Muskoka Queer Film Festival is a joint project of Muskoka Pride and Sanctuary Studios Inc.

#MQFF 2023 is the fourth annual film festival, with the best in queer cinema from around the world screening at Rene M Caisse Theatre in Bracebridge, Muskoka.

Summery Cheesecake Recipe 🫐🍓🫐

CRUST

250 ml (1 cup) graham cracker crumbs
125 ml (½ cup) walnuts or pecans
30 mL (2 Tbsp) granulated sugar
125 ml (½ cup) butter, melted

FILLING

1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, room temperature
125 ml (½ cup) powdered sugar
250 ml (1 cup) plain 2% Greek yogurt
5 mL (1 tsp) lemon zest
30 mL (2 Tbsp) lemon juice, separated
125 ml (½ cup) Fresh Blueberries
125 ml (½ cup) Fresh Raspberries
5 mL (1 tsp) gelatin
30 mL (2 Tbsp) warm water

TOPPING

250 ml (1 cup) whipped cream
250 ml (1 cup) Fresh Blueberries
250 ml (1 cup) Fresh Raspberries

Prepare a standard loaf pan by lining with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides.

Using a food processor, pulse the graham crackers and nuts into fine crumbs. Add granulated sugar and melted butter to the food processor and pulse until combined. Press onto the bottom and slightly up the sides of the pan. Set aside.

In a small bowl, stir gelatin powder and water. Let bloom 10 minutes. In a small saucepan over medium heat, warm 15 mL (1 Tbsp) lemon juice, Fresh Blueberries and Fresh Raspberries. Stir continuously for 3 minutes until the berry juices begin to release. Smash the berries as the mixture continues to simmer for 2-3 minutes. Add the gelatin mixture, stir and let cool.

In a large bowl, beat cream cheese, powdered sugar, Greek yogurt, lemon zest and remaining juice until smooth and creamy, about 2-3 minutes. Mix in the cooled berry mixture until well combined.

Pour cheesecake filling over crust. Cover and chill in refrigerator 4 hours or overnight. Lift cheesecake out of pan using the parchment paper. Before serving, top with whipped cream, blueberries and raspberries. Serve cold.

At this time of year, especially on back roads near lakes and rivers of Muskoka, it is easy to spot large gray nests, high up and often on a platform. Osprey nests are always aloft and built near water. This vantage point helps them spot and capture fish, as well as elude predators.

I love summer in Muskoka. I do. I love everything

I love summer in Muskoka. I do. I love everything about it. I love those first tweeps of the robins when they arrive from wherever it is robins “winter”. I love watching all the ways blue water ripples and dips. I love how a lake is, as Walt Whitman said: “calm as the dawn” one day, then fiendishly wild and wavy the next.

I love sitting on a dock in late afternoon in July and August chatting with the friends I only ever encounter on a dock in July and August. I love the wind in my hair as I bounce across the lake in my beat-up old Whaler. Oh! And tiger-tail ice cream. I love the taste of tiger-tail ice cream, not because it’s good but because when I eat it I’m age 10 again and after I finish I’m going swimming.
